Jining Sime Darby Longgong Port Co Ltd (also known as the South Port) was incorporated in November 2008 as a joint venture company between Sime Darby Overseas (HK) Limited (70%) and Jining City Shizhong District City Construction Investment Co Ltd (30%).
South Port is set against the lush backdrop the southern suburban scenery of Jining, a prefecture-level city in the Southwestern region of the Shandong province, People’s Republic of China. Jining is today the northernmost city reachable by navigation on the 1,770km Grand Canal of China, also known as the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal – the longest ancient man-made canal or waterway in the world.
The principal activities of South Port are marketing and operation of inland coal and general cargo. South Port is also known as Longgonghe, located south of Jining city. Still in its planning stages, South Port aims to employ over 100 people to man and facilitate the port operations.
In the overall development plan of South Port, the first phase will see the construction of three 1,000 ton coal berths, a coal stack yard, loading facilities, office buildings and other port facilities which are targeted for completion by the end of 2009. The first phase expansion plan will enable South Port to achieve a capacity of 3 million MT per annum.
The second phase entails the construction of three more 1,000 ton coal berths, planned in accordance to the Local Government Master plan of building a 8.3 km railway track from Jining West Station to the Longgonghe area linking the South Port. The second phase is expected in to complete in 2012, enabling the port to handle an additional capacity 3 million MT per annum.
As part of the People’s Republic of China’s national agenda, plans have been implemented to consolidate 33 coal ports in the region to two ports; North Port and South Port, to improve transport efficiency and the environment. The exercise will make both North Port and South Port among the busiest and largest coal ports in the Shandong province.
