Jining Sime Darby Port Co Ltd (North Port) was incorporated in March 2008 as a joint venture company between Sime Darby Overseas (HK) Limited (70%) & Jining Municipal Bureau of Navigation Administration (30%). The company’s principal activities are operation and marketing of the inland coal port, also known as North Port at YueJingGou, Jining.
Designed as a modern & environmentally friendly port, it is equipped with the latest facilities such as conveyor belts, reclaimers and ship loading systems to handle a throughput of 13 million MT per annum. Within the overall expansion plan, North Port will have over 150 employees manning the six 1,000 ton coal port berths by 2012. It will be fully operational from July 2009.
As part of the People’s Republic of China’s national agenda, plans have been implemented to consolidate 33 coal ports the in region to two ports; North Port and South Port, to improve the transport efficiency and environment of the Jining area. The exercise will make both North Port and South Port among the busiest and largest coal ports in the Shandong province.
North Port is placed amidst the rich heritage of Shandong, birthplace of Confucius the philosopher, and is north of Jining, a prefecture-level city in the Southwestern region of the Shandong province, People’s Republic of China. Jining is today the northernmost city reachable by navigation on the 1,770km Grand Canal of China, also known as the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal – the longest ancient canal or waterway in the world.
