In August 1989, Sime Darby Petroleum Sdn Bhd (SDP), Sime Darby’s wholly owned subsidiary, acquired a participating interest in a consortium for oil exploration in an area identified as Block PM2, a prospective oil block located towards the north-east of Kelantan and situated to the west of the Malay Basin in the South China Sea.
